In the seed crop, weed control by cultural methods should be avoided to prevent spread of contact viruses like PVX and PVS.

 Spray pre-emergence herbicides like Alachlor (3.1 ha^-1), Simazine (0.5 kg ha^-1) and Nitrofen (4.0 l ha^-1), Metribuzin (0.75 kg ha^-1), Methabenz thiazuron (2. l ha^-1) to control weeds.

 Pre-emergence herbicides should be applied within five days of planting and the soil should have sufficient moisture.

 Weeding operations should be completed within 30 - 40 days of planting both in hills as well as in plains.
