Avoidance of Soft Rot

Planting material free from soft rot bacteria can be obtained from stem cuttings grown under aseptic conditions. Such material gets infected during the process of planting. Therefore, the most practical way is to use clean and healthy seed tubers harvested from a healthy crop and stored under good conditions. Avoid cut tubers, since injured tubers provide ready entry sites and infection spreads through knives used for cutting. Use of the sprinkler irrigation is better than flood irrigation to avoid soft rot. Avoid injury to crop by minimizing inter-cultivation. Follow insect control measures as insects like tuber moth also provide avenues (tunnels) for infection.
