TPS families

Three TPS populations namely TPS C3, HPS-I/13 and 92-PT-27 have been so far recommended for commercial cultivation in India.

TPS-C3 (JTH/C107 x EX/A680-16):  Recommended for commercial cultivation in the 1991 AICPIP workshop, this population is medium maturing with yield range of 350-400 q/ha in 90-100 days crop raised from seedling tubers. Tubers are white – yellow, round oval with fleet to medium deep eyes. It produces mostly medium size tubers with high dry matter. The crop is highly resistant against phoma leaf spots, and both early and late blights.

HPS-1/13 (MF-1 x TPS-13):  It was also recommended for commercial cultivation in 1991. It is a medium to late maturing population with yield range of 350-400 q/ha in 90-100 days crop raised through seedling tubers. Tubers produced are yellow and oval-round in shape. The crop generally has high resistance to phoma leaf spots and also both early and late blights.

92-PT-27 (83-P-47 x TPS/D-150):  This population, recommended in 2001, has shown a higher yield potential than TPS-C3 and HPS-I/13 in tuberlet production in nursery bed, and in field as transplanted crop especially in the eastern plains. It is also medium to late maturing type but has early and fast tuber bulking habit, giving 10% higher yield over TPS C3 and HPS-I/13. Tubers generally are yellow-white, oval, fleet and large. Crop is vigorous, resistant to phoma leaf spots as well as early and late blights.

TPS populations with desired attributes are now available and can be used to supplement the supply of quality planting material either by transplanting seedlings or G0 seedling tubers raised from TPS for growing the commercial potato crop. This results in low cost of seed especially in areas where good quality tuber seed of popular varieties cannot be produced and is expansive due to long distance transportation.
